Collagen, on the other hand, is what's called an incomplete protein. It's very high in specific amino acids like glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline — which happen to be exactly the amino acids your body needs to build collagen-rich tissue like skin, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage — but it's low in some essential amino acids your muscles need to actually grow and repair.
Why this matters practically
If your goal is building or maintaining muscle mass — which matters for almost everyone, especially as you age — collagen alone won't get you there. You need a complete protein source with adequate leucine content to trigger muscle protein synthesis effectively.
But if your goal includes supporting joint health, tendon resilience, or skin elasticity, collagen brings something a standard whey or plant protein doesn't offer in the same concentration.
So which one should you actually take?

They're not competing supplements. Think of complete protein as building the engine and collagen as maintaining the frame it runs in.
A quick note on amounts
Total daily protein needs vary by activity level, age, and goals, but generally landing somewhere around 0.7-1g of protein per pound of bodyweight is a reasonable target for most active adults, with complete protein sources making up the bulk of that. Collagen is typically added on top, in the 10-15g range, rather than counted as part of your main protein target.
